Amberley residents campaign to save  schoolThe Society has represented the community’s interests in a number of campaigns to maintain the character and sustainability of the village. Successful campaigns include saving the Black Horse pub, the school, the shop as well as working with partners to build the Gurkha Bridge over the River Arun. The Society is also involved in reviewing planning applications for housing developments both private and social.

The success of the campaigns shows how effective joint action by local communities can be. The Society relies on support from the community. Join

SAVING THE VILLAGE SCHOOL

Gurkha BridgeThe original suspension bridge was badly damaged. A campaign to restore the bridge to its original design was mounted by the Amberley Society and soldiers serving with the 70 Gurkha Field Support Squadron of 36 Engineer Regiment volunteered to carry out the work on a ‘materials only' basis. The community fought to save the Amberley Village Shop which is now run as a successful profit making enterprise.

Drewitt’s Farm Development

The Society has written to Horsham District Council and The South Downs National Park Authority objecting to the poor visual quality of the New stone wall being built in Front of the house on Plot 1. May 2015

Latest Planning Applications can be seen at Horsham District Council or South Downs National Park Authority.

After efforts for a community purchase of the Black Horse failed, it was re-registered in July 2016 as an Asset of Community Value. Now under new ownership it awaiting planning approval for refurbishment as a pub, with additional b & b accommodation.
